Aromatherapy is one of the fastest-growing methods of natural medicine, especially when it comes to its use in inhalations, cosmetics, care, hydrotherapy and massages, care and therapeutic treatments. This method is based on a centuries-old tradition and the latest application and clinical research. It consists in introducing natural plant essential oils into the body through the respiratory tract (inhalation and aromatherapy sessions in the sauna) and through the skin (massage, bath, compress, cosmetics, treatments). These methods are aimed at introducing into the circulatory system biologically active substances contained in plant cells that act on various ailments and affect the psyche. Research shows that it is a very effective, comprehensive and intense action.

Essential oils

Essential oils are substances obtained from plant materials such as leaves, roots, herbs, wood, bark, seeds, twigs, fruits and flowers. They are obtained depending on the plant species in several ways:

  •     by distillation with steam or water, e.g. lavender, mint, eucalyptus, cinnamon oils,
  •     by squeezing or centrifuging fruit peels, e.g. orange, lemon, bergamot, lemongrass oil,
  •     by dry distillation of wood, e.g. tar oils.

The oils obtained in this way contain active herbal substances with various properties. Thanks to them, for example, bergamot oil is a natural deodorant, which has a special effect on bacteria that break down sweat and bad skin odour, and tea tree oil is the strongest natural antimicrobial agent.

Depending on the type of oils, it can have a different effect on our mood and mental state by relaxing, refreshing, stimulating and adding vigor. Plant substances also have a huge impact on the processes taking place in our body, and so through their use we can alleviate inflammation and improve circulation, endocrine and lymphatic systems, by inhalation through the respiratory tract.

Due to their origin, properties, volatility and durability, oils can be divided into:

  •     citrus (blood orange, lemon, lemongrass, orange leaf, bergamot, mandarin, lime, exotic verbena),
  •     herbal (sage, rosemary, thyme, peppermint, lemon balm, coriander, marjoram, oregano),
  •     forest (Scots pine, cypress, spruce, fir),
  •     floral (geranium, lavender, rosewood),
  •     spicy (cinnamon, clove, ginger, nutmeg),
  •     wood (cedar, sandalwood).
